Many cat lovers and enthusiasts know there is nothing common about the "common house cat"! These animals are among the most fascinating in all of Nature, and many of us feel privileged to share our lives with them. They are an endless source of pleasure, affection, and fascination.
Cats have been "hanging around" humans since the time of the Pharaohs (and before). Modern science can find no reason why they do this, or why our two species are so attracted to each other. In ancient Egypt, cats were pampered pets, worshipped as gods, and harming a cat was a capital offense. Later, in Medieval and even Renaissance Europe they were considered "familiars of the devil" and mercilessly persecuted, tortured and killed. Fortunately, in modern times, we have come to know them as one of the most rewarding of all animal companions. Their beauty, their intelligence, their curiosity and playfulness all fascinate and delight us.
